Why Life Is To Be Valued

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7) Life is to be valued because it proceeds from and has its origins in God. Therefore, the character of God must be considered if people are to have a proper view of human life, for how we view human life and how we treat others is a reflection on how we view God. It is critical then, you understand that human beings were created in the image of God. “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” (Genesis 1:27)

Who Is GOD?

First, God is infinitely holy: “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts.…” (Isaiah 6:3) Since God is holy, human life is holy as well and should be treated as such. Holy means sacred; thus, human life is sacred in the eyes of God. There is just no way possible to reconcile the conflict between abortion and a holy God. Is a child, teenager, or adult’s life any more sacred in God’s eyes than the baby being formed in the womb? No! The breath of life God breathed into your soul is the same breath He has breathed into the life of a baby upon conception in the womb. By considering the holiness of God, hopefully you will be able to see the sacredness in human life as well.

Another characteristic of God is that He is very personal. God is so personal that He knew each one of us even while we were still in our mother’s womb. God knew the prophet Jeremiah and the apostle Paul, calling them both for a specific purpose, even before they came forth out of their mother’s belly. Listen to what the LORD said to Jeremiah: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5) Likewise, listen to the testimony of the apostle Paul: “it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by His grace, To reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the heathen.” (Galatians 1:15-16) When a baby is aborted, it grieves the heart of God because He loves and knows that baby just the same as He loves and knows you. Furthermore, that child’s chance to live out God’s plan for their life has been denied.

A third characteristic of God is that He is a God of life. He is the Living God! In Genesis 1 we see God creating life: plants, birds, sea creatures, land animals and ultimately human beings. Also, the initial command God gave to the first man and woman was a command of life: “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.…” (Genesis 1:28) God is so much a God of life that He says, “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked.…” (Ezekiel 33:11) If God has no pleasure to see even the wicked die, how do you think He feels about the death of an innocent baby who hasn’t even been born yet? We know how God feels about death when we see His Son, Jesus Christ, weeping at the tomb of Lazarus and then issuing forth a command of resurrection and life: “Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth.…” (John 11:43-44) We see Jesus restoring life to a widow’s dead son (Luke 7:12-15) and a religious leader’s 12 year old daughter (Luke 8:51-55). Death and aborted babies sadden and grieve the heart of the Living God. How about you?

Choose Life

The final characteristic of God we are going to look at is God’s love. “God is love”, the apostle John tells us in 1 John 4:8. And the greatest exhibition of love that was ever shown to mankind was when God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to die for guilty sinners. “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.” (1 John 4:9) Again we see the Living God wanting to grant life; however, this time it is eternal life through His Son who conquered the curse of sin and death when He rose from the dead. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

You may have had an abortion, you may be thinking about having one, or you may be involved in the abortion industry in some fashion. But God loves you and has some forgiving words for you if you are willing to turn from sin to Jesus: “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18) If this is what you want, then confess your sins and invite the Lord of Life, Jesus Christ, into your life as your Savior. Then live for Him. He is the only route to heaven and God’s forgiveness.

Thus saith the LORD, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19) Today, choose life. Today, choose Jesus Christ.
